Officials are increasingly facing ethical issues, particularly harassment in sport. As officials are often placed in the unenviable position of alienating 50% of the crowd and players at any given time, they can be subject to criticism, abuse and harassment. Officials can also have enormous influence over athletes, coaches and others in a game or event. Issues such as sportsmanship, injury, cheating, bullying, abuse of power and harassment have all become a part of sport.
It is essential that officials operate professionally and with integrity in their relationships with those who are participating in or associated with their sport. Officials need to know the relevant policies for their sport and act appropriately, in the best interest of all the players.
The Netball Australia Umpires Code of Behaviour has been modelled on the Australian Sports Commission template and is part of the Netball Australia Member Protection Policy. All umpires officiating in an affiliated competition are bound by Umpires Code of Behaviour.
